New year dishes plated beautifully on a stone plate

Osechi Delivery Comparison

When do early-bird deals start? Chilled or frozen? How to choose mail-order osechi.

In short: earlier is cheaper, and popular sets sell out in autumn

For mail-order osechi, early-bird discounts begin in August to October, and the discount is largest the earlier you order. Popular sets can sell out during November, so ordering by mid-December is the safe zone.

"Osechi in summer?" - in the mail-order world, September is already reservation season. Most stores step the discount down over time, so if you have decided to buy, earlier is better. Just check the cancellation policy (how many days before it is free) and lock it in.

Chilled (fresh) vs frozen osechi

 Chilled (fresh)Frozen
StatePre-plated, ready to eatArrives frozen, needs thawing
TasteClosest to freshly madeFlash-freezing has closed the gap
KeepsShort (January 1-2)Long (some keep for weeks frozen)
DeliveryMostly December 31; time slot mattersDecember 28-30, more leeway
Watch outLightly seasoned, spoils faster; storage space~24 hours to thaw in the fridge, plus freezer space

Chilled suits you if you will definitely be home on New Year's Eve; frozen suits you if you want leeway on receiving or eating it. Frozen osechi takes about 24 hours to thaw, so move it to the fridge on the morning of the 31st. Clear fridge space alongside the fridge job in the Year-End Cleaning Checklist.

Many stores start in August to October, usually stepping the discount down over time. Ordering early, after checking the cancellation policy, is to your advantage.

Chilled or frozen - which is better?
